EGG BOILING TIME CHART

How long to
boil eggs

These times are for eggs lowered gently into already-boiling water at sea level. Start the timer as soon as the eggs enter the water, keep the boil gentle, and transfer them to ice water when the alarm sounds.

Eggs from the fridge: add 30 seconds. Above about 3,000 ft (900 m), boiling water is cooler, so use the chart as a starting point and add time gradually.

THE EASY-PEEL METHOD

How to boil eggs
so they peel easily

Start eggs in already-boiling water, rather than heating them from cold. That quick set helps the egg white pull away from the shell. Use the timer above for your preferred yolk.

As soon as the timer ends, move eggs into a bowl of ice water. The rapid cooling stops carryover cooking and creates a little steam between the egg and shell. Crack all over, then peel under a thin stream of water.

RAW OR HARD-BOILED?

How to tell without
cracking the shell

Mixed up the eggs in your fridge? Start with the spin test on a clean, flat surface. It is quick, non-destructive and works because a cooked egg moves as one solid object while the liquid inside a raw egg keeps shifting.

01

Spin the egg

Lay the egg on its side and give it a gentle spin. A hard-boiled egg spins quickly and smoothly. A raw egg turns more slowly and tends to wobble.

Smooth spin → cooked
02

Stop and release

While the egg is spinning, stop it briefly with one finger, then lift your finger. A raw egg may start moving again because the liquid inside is still in motion.

Moves again → raw
03

Crack only if needed

If the spin test is unclear and you plan to use the egg immediately, crack it into a separate clean bowl. This is the only direct check, but it cannot be undone.

Definitive, but destructive
04

Prevent the mix-up

Store cooled hard-boiled eggs in a labelled container, separate from raw eggs. Mark the cooking date and refrigerate them promptly.

Label + date the container
Do not use the float test for this.

Floating mainly reflects the size of an egg’s air cell and therefore its age—not whether the egg is raw or cooked.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Egg timer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions home cooks ask most about boiling, cooling and serving eggs.

Why do eggs crack while boiling?

Sudden temperature changes and a hard boil can crack shells. Lower eggs gently into simmering water with a spoon and avoid overcrowding the pot.

How can I tell if an egg is raw or hard-boiled?

Spin it gently on a flat surface. A hard-boiled egg spins quickly and smoothly, while a raw egg is slower and wobbles. Stop it briefly and release it: a raw egg may begin moving again.

Does altitude change how long eggs take?

Yes. Water boils at a lower temperature at higher elevations, so eggs need a little longer. Add about 30 seconds at 3,000 feet and adjust to taste.

Can I use this timer for more than one egg?

Yes. Similar-size eggs fully covered by water use the same cooking time. Choose a larger pot so the water returns to a boil promptly.
